The first building targeted for cleaning was the headquarters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, within the US Capitol building complex.
Over time, the cleaning of the building had proved to be a difficult challenge. Various types of intervention methods had been used in the numerous previous attempts, such as high pressure washers or chemical cleanings, but these techniques did not achieve the desired result.
The biggest problem was the preservation of the historic patina and original finishes, something that worried the curator of the Institute who for this reason had refused the cleaning solutions that had been proposed over the years.
